Melbourne cyclists will be able to take a safe new route between Docklands and the city’s east with Citywide Infrastructure undertaking works on dedicated bike lanes this month on La Trobe Street.
The project forms the centrepiece of the City of Melbourne’s 2012-13 bike plans and includes the installation of physically-separated kerbside bike lanes along La Trobe Street, from Spencer Street to Victoria Street.
The first stage has already begun with works underway on the north side of the street, from Spencer Street to William Street, with only minimal disruption to local traffic.
The installation of bike lanes is a major focus for the City of Melbourne. In 2012, 11 per cent of all vehicles in the city during the morning peak were cyclists. As part of the overall strategy, Citywide has already completed bike lane installations in Clarendon Street, Albert Street and Wellington Parade, to name a few.
