TWO mowing veterans are proving age is just a number after notching up over 10 years of service as part of Citywide’s Open Space team. Rod Dagge, 71, and Gavan Hume, 65, maintain turf at sports grounds, recreational centres, parks and gardens in the Bayside municipality as part of a long standing partnership with Bayside City Council.
The duo maintain the diverse environment in Bayside including 17 kilometres of foreshore including numerous parks and sporting grounds.
“We enjoy coming to work every single day and being outdoors is such a privilege,” Gavan said.
“No two days are the same and we really do work hard to give the locals a community they can be proud of. It’s a great office to work in.”
Rod and Gavan are part of a team of eight experts that apply knowledge, specialised equipment and the latest technology to maintain the community’s assets. Citywide has provided Open Space services since 2001. It encompasses parks and garden maintenance, tree maintenance, landscaping, weed control and turf maintenance.
They both regularly interact with members of the community who provide the team with valuable feedback.
“They’re very aware of their surroundings and tell us a lot of handy information such as if a tree appears to be in trouble,” Rod said.
Business Manager Lisa Carty said the pair embody Citywide’s values. “They’re committed to providing excellent service, establishing positive relationships with stakeholders and are great representatives of the culture of excellence we strive for here at Citywide,” Lisa said.
“With Citywide getting set to celebrate its 20th anniversary next month, we are confident the team have a bright future ahead of them, especially with the high quality of work we provide.”
Both Gavan and Rod transitioned into mowing almost accidently after coming from completely different working environments.
“I worked for a large paint brand for 35 years before joining Citywide back in 2005,” Gavan said.
“I still remember my first interview at Citywide when I asked them to give me a go. Since then I’ve never looked back and it really is a rewarding career.”
Rod was a Sales Representative for a toy manufacturer, a far cry from his current role.
“I did that for 20 years but then tough economic times hit and so I decided to try something completely different,” Rod said.
Gavan and Rod not only work alongside one another but are also good mates who enjoy each other’s company.
“We start the day at 6.30am on weekdays and work until 3pm,” Rod said.
“Gavan sings songs and sometimes you can hear him from a mile away.”
The pair enjoy having access to world class equipment including commercial ride on mowers to ensure lawns always look their best.
“Access to the right tools makes our jobs easier and we can do more work in shorter periods,” Rod said.
As to what the future holds, Gavan and Rod agree they’ll keep mowing until it is time to retire.
