Citywide statement in relation to A Current Affair story

by Citywide | 20.10.2017
Citywide is investigating allegations that individual employees on the Moreland City Council waste management contract have been mixing different waste products during routine collections against company procedure.

The practice of co-mingling of waste streams is definitely not company policy; it is not a practice condoned nor sanctioned by the company.

In our view, it is unacceptable and as a responsible, community-focused organisation being accountable to our customers, stakeholders and the community at large, we will not tolerate such behaviour.

This is an issue of individuals who appear to be operating against clear company directives and these individuals are now subject to an internal investigation.

Across the business, Citywide moves close to a quarter of a million tonnes of waste and recycling products every year, and we operate in line with industry best practice.

We are strong supporters of recycling and resource recovery. This type of alleged activity makes no commercial sense whatsoever. We pay significant fees to transfer waste to landfill, whereas we do not pay these fees for recyclables we take to resource recovery facilities.
