Citywide Reduce Carbon Footprint with new Greenfleet and Bio Diesel Trials
Wednesday, July 08, 2009
Citywide recently completed a tender process to provide the company's commercial fleet requirements into the new financial year. One of the major tender requirements was for a low cost, fuel efficient fleet alternative that has the ability to reduce Citywide's carbon emissions through a Greenfleet initiative.
Greenfleet is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to helping the community reduce the environmental impact of travel, business and lifestyle choices by adopting low-carbon alternatives and biosequestration.
It establishes permanent, biodiverse native forests to offset greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, air travel, households and businesses.
In addition to absorbing greenhouse gases, the native forests grown provide habitat for wildlife, improve soil and water quality, tackle salinity and reduce erosion.
The majority of Citywide's commercial fleet will be purchased under the Greenfleet program, with further commercial vehicles to follow. 50% of the fleet will be fuelled with LPG and 50% will be fuelled with diesel fuel, depending on the type of vehicle and its requirements.
The advantages of using LPG as opposed to traditional fuels include a reduction in vehicle running costs close to 50% and an emissions reduction of approximately 30%. Under the Greenfleet tree planting scheme, this figure will increase an additional 70%
Greenfleet was the first not-for-profit organisation to have forestry offset methodology approved under the Federal Government's Greenhouse Friendly™ initiative. Its forestry methods, administrative processes and legal agreements have all been independently scrutinized to ensure they meet appropriate standards.
Citywide, an industry leader in environmental practices, has been a pioneer in the use of alternative fuels within the waste industry, introducing Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) into its waste collection vehicles; investing in research and development in air powered vehicles; and trialling dual fuel diesel/LPG in waste collection vehicles for Citywide’s City of Manningham waste collection contract.
Coupled with this, as part of an ongoing initiative, Citywide will be investigating the use of B20 ‘Bio-diesel’ and will be trialling it on a number of its truck fleet. Underpinning this initiative is the need to have Citywide’s small commercial and corporate fleet operating at less than 10.5 litres per 100km. If the trial proves successful, the entire Citywide diesel fleet will be transferred over to bio-diesel in the near future.
The Greenfleet purchase and move to LPG/Diesel powered vehicles, is part of a deliberate strategy to substantially reduce Citywide’s carbon footprint and show’s the organisations ongoing commitment to being a leader in its field in the delivery of innovative new products and services and to providing high quality services to its customers across all operations.
