Help Celebrate National Tree Day

Monday, July 13, 2009
Residents from across the City of Whittlesea are invited to join in a special tree planting event to be held at Epping Soccer Stadium to celebrate National Tree Day.
Whittlesea Mayor Cr Mary Lalios said that families, schools and community groups are expected to take part in the event on Sunday 2 August.

“National Tree Day is the biggest and most popular event in our Community Tree Planting Program and is promoted through Planet Ark as a nationwide event,” Cr Lalios said.

“Our planting program is held annually fromMay to August in our local parks and reserves and is a fantastic way for people of all ages to become involved in regenerating and reinvigorating bushland areas in the City of Whittlesea.

“The new trees will provide habitat links for local bird species and other animals that live in the tree canopies.”

National Tree Day is one of six individual community tree planting days in the City of Whittlesea. Last year more than 10,000 new trees and shrubs were planted across the municipality as part of the Community Tree Planting Program.

A wide variety of Indigenous trees and shrubs are planted each year including iconic local River Red Gums.

Each event is usually held on a Sunday and attendees are provided with the necessary tools, equipment and skills from Council’s Bushland Management Staff.
