AUSTRALIA’S GREENEST ASPHALT MELBOURNE RESPONDS TO CLIMATE CHANGE
Wednesday, March 19, 2008
Today Australian physical services company, CityWide, laid a path to a greener future with the nation’s first low emission road. Greenpave, an advanced asphalt product reducing emissions by 30%, has been laid in Kay Street, Carlton.
“This is a watershed in Melbourne’s response to climate change,” said CityWide Managing Director, Kerry Osborne.
“Greenpave is the future of asphalt in Australia.”
Greenpave is produced at CityWide’s North Melbourne asphalt plant in partnership with Shell Bitumen. Recently redeveloped, the North Melbourne plant is the most environmentally sensitive in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Kay Street trial was commissioned by the City of Melbourne, which has a tough target of zero net emissions from the municipality by 2030. The road will undergo a trial period of three months.
“The use of Greenpave joins CH2 and the Queen Vic Solar project as part of the City’s integrated strategy to reduce emissions. CityWide has shown how technology can been used to benefit the entire community,” Lord Mayor John So said.
Greenpave is produced a significantly lower temperatures than standard asphalt. Similar products have been used in Europe since 1995. Greenpave offers a range of performance, safety and environmental benefits. Specifically it achieves:
- over 30% reduction in greenhouse gases
- over 30% reduction in fume emissions
- up to 55% reduction in fine dust
- energy savings of up to 30%.
“The reengineering of Australia’s physical services industry will be vital to the achievement of emissions targets.
“We can now offer Victorians safer and greener asphalt,” said Mr Osborne.
