Citywide has been providing civil infrastructure
maintenance works to the City of Melbourne for over six years. These works include civil engineering and design, drainage, line-marking, street furniture and sign maintenance, traffic management and events and emergency services. On an ongoing basis Citywide also provide asset inspection and asset condition rating services.
As part of our work with the City of Melbourne, in January 2015 Citywide completed a major drainage project at the intersection of King and Collins streets. This project involved the complete closure of Collins Street and major closures of King Street, as well as shut down and replacement of tram services running along Collins Street. Our traffic management experts oversaw the road closures from Friday night until the Monday morning. This project was critical to future upgrade works in this water catchment area of Melbourne.
Citywide managed this significant project, which called on multiple crews, services owners, and numerous subcontractors to work together, while minimising the impact to surrounding residents and visitors to the City. Citywide also successfully coordinated all of the necessary permits and approvals that are required for carrying out such substantial works.
Managing stakehoders to plan and obtain approval for the works was the key critical success factor for this project. Citywide, in conjunction with the City of Melbourne, VicRoads, Yarra Trams and numerous essential services came together to plan and deliver these works.
Citywide’s Business Unit Manager, Elena Macaulay, oversaw the works and provides us with some further insight into the challenges of the project.
“As with any drainage works, redundant services caused several issues that could have derailed the overall project. These services are rarely marked on any plans but when you come across them they are deemed ‘live’ until confirmed otherwise. Quick thinking by the teams and cooperation from service authorities allowed us to ensure that the works were successfully delivered within the allocated time.”
Citywide prepared comprehensive project plans (traffic management plans including a traffic impact assessment, a consultation plan and an hour-by-hour construction program) to ensure that the works were a success and that all risks were mitigated. Diligent site supervision also ensured that the new drainage pipe was installed safely, on time, to scope and on budget.
Citywide’s extensive experience and skilled team delivered a great outcome for the client and for the City of Melbourne community.
“The project ran smoothly and was completed on time and on budget. The client was pleased with the professional and timely manner in which the works were completed, especially considering the short lead-up time to the works,” Elena said.
