An unremarkable business meeting at Citywide sparked an opportunity for Hugo Dangerfield (front, left) to give back to the community.
Hugo (or Hugh), who works for National Australia Formwork, a civil infrastructure services supplier to Citywide, has had his fair share of challenges in life, having spent years sleeping rough in the parks and on the streets of Melbourne.
A routine contract meeting recently at our North Melbourne depot brought his story back into sharp focus when he spotted a poster calling for Citywide staff to volunteer with food rescue charity, FareShare.
As a corporate partner, Citywide supports FareShare through pro bono waste management services, in-kind horticulture services support in FareShare’s community kitchen gardens and through corporate team volunteering.
Wanting to “give something back” for all the support he got, Hugo instantly volunteered to join our team: cooking almost 2,000 meals for disadvantaged and homeless Victorian families and individuals.
“I know I went through some tough and challenging times,” said Hugo, who spent long periods of time sleeping in Melbourne’s Flagstaff Gardens, before securing steady employment with National Australia Formwork.
“I really depended on other people and services and support, like what FareShare provide. It was the least I felt I could do when I saw the opportunity to help in their kitchen.”
